In Lovecraft's Shadow, 3

  1. IN LOVECRAFT'S SHADOW 3 - A black ink and black color pencil drawing on a 11 x 14 size coquille board. It appears in the book, "In Lovecraft's Shadow," by August Derleth.

Whenever I drew a picture that is essentially a dark composition, it was important to keep the highlights to a minimum, placing them on just a few objects in the picture to which I wanted to direct the viewers attention.

Too many highlights would diffuse the viewer's attention from the important elements in the scene. Most art teachers whose books I've read considered the over-application of "details" and "highlights" as being the ruination of an artist's work. It was not always easy for me to control those two elements.
